Position: Senior Support Pharmacist for Healthcare of Older People

Salary: £43,742.00 to £50,056.00 per year

About the Role

An exciting opportunity has opened for Senior Support Pharmacists specializing in Healthcare of Older People Services at Good Hope Hospital, part of the University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB) Trust. This role is ideal for proactive, dynamic individuals with vision, drive, and enthusiasm to enhance patient care in a hospital setting.

This is a Band 6 to Band 7 development role, part of UHB’s rotational programme. You will initially work as a Clinical Support Pharmacist at a single site, and upon completion of the required competencies, you will progress into the Senior Support Pharmacist role within the Healthcare of Older People Services. The position offers a chance to grow professionally, with the potential to pursue an independent prescribing qualification.

Main Duties

As a Senior Support Pharmacist, your key responsibilities will include:

Providing clinical specialist input for the Healthcare of Older People service.
Acting as a role model and offering guidance to clinical support pharmacists working in the specialty.
Delivering a high-quality clinical pharmacy service in line with the priorities set by the Associate Chief Pharmacist – Clinical Services.
Reviewing and improving working practices to optimize service delivery.
Assisting in addressing medication supply problems within the specialty.
Coordinating efforts across tertiary, secondary, and primary care, working closely with GP surgeries and community pharmacies to ensure seamless patient discharges.
Demonstrating awareness and commitment to the Trust’s Clinical Governance Agenda and implementing agreed clinical governance initiatives.
Demonstrating pharmaceutical knowledge of drugs used in complex regimens, particularly for critically ill patients and those on multiple interacting medications.
Ensuring the quality of pharmaceutical care provided to patients.
Maintaining professional accountability to service users, stakeholders, and the profession.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate should meet the following criteria:

Hold a Vocational Master’s degree in pharmacy (or equivalent qualification).
Have completed or be near completion (within the next six months) of a postgraduate clinical pharmacy qualification.
Be willing to work toward a non-medical prescribing qualification.
Membership of the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) is required.
At least 12 months of post-registration work experience as a hospital pharmacist, covering multiple specialties, or an equivalent level of knowledge.
Experience working as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
Commitment to delivering high-quality pharmaceutical care.
Experience teaching or presenting to healthcare professionals and/or patients.
Demonstrates commitment to Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
Knowledge of hospital clinical pharmacy practices, national initiatives (e.g., NICE, NSF), and available resources for Medicines Information.
Familiarity with managing drug budgets and working with related information.
